Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for Black college students, was organized at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, on December 4th, 1906. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was born out of the desire for maintaining close association and unified support for members of a small minority group, in as much as they were denied, for the most part, the mutual helpfulness which the majority of the students attending their university regularly enjoyed.

The seven visionary founders at Cornell, Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy, labored hard in the years of severe economic struggle and racial conflict in the United States. In spite of the difficulties of era they lived in, these early pioneers succeeded in laying a firm foundation for the fraternity and remained steadfast in their goals toward development of the Fraternity's membership - espousing the principles of good character, sound scholarship, fellowship, and the uplifting of humanity, especially that of struggling Black population in the Diaspora. The Fraternity has grown steadily, both in membership and influence throughout the years. Membership was racially integrated in 1945 and has expanded to the extent that there are now over 700 chapters located throughout the U.S., Caribbean Islands, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the West Indies.

Alpha Phi Alpha history is African American History. Alpha Phi Alpha has been involved in most of the events that have sculpted today's society. It is possible that you have read about an Alpha man without your knowledge. For instance, lets suppose you were talking politics...Would you realize that Andrew Young and David Dinkins are both Alpha Men. Note: both these men were the first African American Mayor's of major U.S. cities, Atlanta and New York respectively. We could drown you with information with successes of Alpha Men, but then what would that leave you to search for?

You may hear an Alpha Man take pride in being first. Alpha and it's Brothers have a reputation for reaching goals that many others only think and/or talk about. Please do not take these comments as boasting, as they are meant to be presented here with the utmost humbleness and confidence.
